Yep yep Happy New Year Mo fugga's, realised I posted an incredible 7 entries last year thats a feckin' record if ever I saw one, lots going on behind the scenes but thats pretty (meaning VERY) poor especially as nowt's been out since '09. In true retro fashion I forgot to post my best of 2010 (majority of it's written complete with photo's taken back last errr Jan 2011). In the immortal words of Blade Keep Watchin this space cause I be blowin'... (super II) theres a decent (well more than's ever been out on Crate Escape) due in the next few months including 2 tp approved releases (so far, lets hope there's a third to add to that) and a curve ball that if you don't like I'd question lot's about your character, minerals AND vitamins but thats whole different topic...

May start doing the show again regularly if people actually want that

Didn't realise I hadn't blogged this, ooops, slippin!

June saw the second beat cypher of the 2010 season with producer/keyboard player BUG, Birmingham's up and coming SMITH THE MISTER and emcee/producers CAPPO, TRANQILL with Brum vet MALIK also sharing mic duties; although the beats banged all night we noticed a few faces missing from the usual Beat Cypher crowd (where you at??!) well with the football out the way hopefully you'll surface for this next instalment (you want us to keep doing this right??).

Ok so we're back; news would have come a little earlier but we were holding out for a special guest who eventually couldn't commit no problems, the line up is still strong as ever and here it is.

ON THE BOARDS
MUNESHINE - Producer/Emcee/Engineer hailing from Toronto Canada Muneshine has put in work in all 3 fields amongst the various crews he's affiliated with and with his own material as a soloist; his album Opporunity Knocks LP had features and production from the likes of DJ SPINNA, PETE ROCK, ILLMIND, M-PHAZES and guest verses from SUPASTITION, ODDISEE, KEN STARR and EMILIO ROJAs, with worldwide appeal Mune has managed to scan over 30,000 units just in Japan territory alone causing for a few exclusive releases for that region. Our third international guest at a beat cypher we're honored to have Mune grace the boards!.

THE TARTAN BULLIES (S-TYPE & Jaisu) - You already know the names and the stomping beats!, S-TYPE and Jaisu are collectively the Tartan Bullies; given that its been the best part of 2 years since these boys graced the beat cypher stages we figured we get them back together to let us know whats been going on since they appeared at Beat Cypher 02 back in Dec 08. S-TYPE has been going from strength to strength with production work for Tek's (of Bootcamp Clik / Tek and Steele) lead single from his solo LP, Up and coming J.U.S.T.I.C.E League (Rick Ross, Toni Braxton, Mary J Blige) artist LAWS and Hall Of Justus (Little Brother) artist JOE SCUDDA, with more and more credits appearing and inevitable solo work S-TYPE has NOT been slouching!. JON PHONICS - Another familiar Louis Den face, Phonics is back simply because dude has been extra prolific in the 18 months since he appeared at Beat Cypher 03, Phonics has put out a myriad of releases in that time including the BEATS & PIECES beat tape which dropped last Xmas for free download and his sophmore LP "HALF PAST CALM 2" (http://jonphonics.bandcamp.com/album/half-past-calm-2) which had strong name checks such as KOSYNE (sorry hehe), JEHST, CYRUS MALAKAI, SONNYJIM, M9, VERB T, OBBA SUPA to name just a few not content with stopping there he's got 2 EP's dropping in the form a collab project (with other Louis Den producers) another collab effort with fellow producer from the Ill Rythmikz camp and Louis Den JEEKAY. The Tragedy...DO IT!

The peeps over at DWG have teamed up with Iller Regime and 25 To Life to bring you some very dope previously unreleased Tragedy (aka Intelligent Hoodlum) tracks from his second very dope and slept on Saga Of A Hoodlum album. At the time of writing it's nearly sold out so be quick if you want to get one...3 original unreleased versions and the album versions on the flip (only one of those has been on official wax before)

Many of you will have heard the original versions of "Death Row" and "At Large" - well, the opportunity arose for us to get involved in a 25 To Life approved pressing of these tracks, plus the previously unheard demo of "Pump The Funk". These original versions were due to appear on Trag's unreleased/controversial 2nd album "Black Rage" (1992), but A&M Records got cold balls and decided to change the title to "Saga Of A Hoodlum"(1993) change the tracklist and remix some of the tracks (we have put the 3 previously available album 'remixes' on the flip).

The "Black Rage Demos" are sought after (previously only available as crusty dubs from Westwood's Capital Rap Show) and production wise are closer to Trag's earlier work, the depressing original mix of "Death Row" is genius and the venomous production of the original "At Large" is nothing short of amazing - Trag holds no bars. The original "Pump The Funk" (this was originally named "Shit For Your System") is totally different to the final version with a stripped back beat for the jeeps.

Special thanks to Iller Regime Recordings for hooking up the audio (infamous QBC aficionado) and Robbie at www.unkut.com for putting us in contact with Trag.... hopefully one day the remaining lost album tracks will see the light of day, tracks like "Adolesents At War", "Black Rage" and the anti-cop "Bullet" are just too good to be lost in the A&M vaults!

MALIK
Birmingham legend Malik is a member of Brum based hiphop collective MD7 who have released the albums "The Power And The Glory" and "Life In The City" much to critical acclaim thanks to well received singles such as silent screams (http://youtu.be/51cjXRnRiG0) and The Rain (http://youtu.be/r3yStnFmK3g), as a soloist Malik has made moves with his own singles "Something Real" (http://mysp.ac/9aVNjn) and "Blues Ground" (http://bit.ly/bCLFBB).

Malik has performed along side artist such as Fabolous, Amy Winehouse , Immortal Technique, Jay-Z, Heartless Crew ,Mark Ronson, Skinnyman, A-Alikes, Rodney P, Yogi, Mike GLC Black Twang and Foxy Brown to mention a few, he's also worked with producers such as Baby J, Urban Monk,Cipher and Mark Ronson. Quite the resume!!, at the Beat Cypher Malik will be performing over the backdrops provided by the nights producers as well as some newer treats!

The CD features all 7 studio recorded TDS cuts in their remastered glory, but that's just for starters. We were given full access to Mark Cohen's extensive stash of TDS paraphernalia and we unearthed some real gems for you. For starters we have both videos from the "What's This World..." 12" which have pretty much remained unseen until now (other than a few local Boston airings back in the day). On top of that we also have the live video footage from two TDS shows in all its lo-fi glory, plus a great selection of vintage TDS press shots and concert flyers. We round the package off with full multi-track acapellas for 6 of the 7 TDS tracks for your remixing pleasure.

Home Cookin is proud to present the Breakfest opening party hosted by UK Hip-Hop legend SPARKII SKI and local hero Mad Flow.

WHO IS SPARKII SKI??

For those of you who don't know, Sparkii is a true veteran and pioneer of the UK Hip Hop scene.
A mentor to London Posse, he did production duties on their classic Gangster Chronicles album and also master-minded the Modern Day Jazz Story album with Courtney Pine and DJ Pogo.
From rapping with MC Melo, to remixing Blade and producing and programming for everyone from Monie Love to Beverley Knight, commisions from English National Opera, soundtracks and lectures; Sparkii has done it all.
He is also one of the prime movers behind the international King Of The Beats production competition.

Breakfest kicks off the next day and the party gets started with a bang at the yardbird on Friday night.

Reason for the promo train on this LDBC being a bit late was because we were venueless!!, after going back to the Sunflower Lounge to secure Decembers date I was told they have changed the music policy and werent too keen on the "Smoking" that went on outisde...not sure what the whole mess was down to im guessing (as the owner was there that night of beat cypher 07) they didnt like the fact we overran slightly and maybe our little "car beats" session outside, so umm yeah we are now at the BIRMINGHAM SOUND BAR which is a much sicker venue (but comes at a price)...so please smoker squad, go for a little wander before you do what you do, dont want to bait up this joint too! and doooo come out and support, plenty more overheads this time so we gotta keep this one going (bring a mate and tell them bring a mate, and tell em both to bring beats!!)

More than 15 years into their musical journey, The Herbaliser just keep getting bigger, stronger and better. It all began in the early 1990s when West London duo Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba discovered a shared passion for hip-hop, rare groove, funk and jazz. James Brown, DJ Premier, Lalo Schifrin, David Axelrod and Serge Gainsbourg were their youthful heroes.
Expanding their live line-up to a nine-piece in the late 1990s, Herbaliser became acclaimed festival favourites around the globe. Playing to increasingly large and appreciative crowds also helped Jake and Ollie broaden their studio working methods.

I've got a full review coming soon of their most recent release but this vid is for the great "Out To Lunch" 12" feat Rod Hotley and the top cut and paste "Double Glazing" on the flip (got named in Big Daddy as one of the best cut and paste tracks ever and they know their onions, hip-hop and errr breaks obviously). CH then went on to put out what is for me still the best breaks mix ever, "3 Sinister Sylables" urinating on other breaks cd's from a very large height (rumour has it Jay Glaze is actually a giant although I might have made that up). I used to love them, then went through a period of preferring 12"s (do I have to pause that on a hip-hop blog?) and then back to getting as many hip-hop 7"s as I could so what can I say about this besides I need one in my life! The track list alone is enough to make any b-boy drool. In stores 1st December so in plenty of time for Christmas if anyone is feeling (very) generous! Going to be interesting to see how the tracks are ordered and if the 7"s have any sort of inner sleeves...

Yep I know I wouldn't usually do a post on a film but this ones an exception. My better half booked tickets for an advance screening at The Electric (oldest cinema in the UK!) with Shane Meadows and Paddy Considine doing a Q&A after (unfortunately no Scorz), sounds like the film business is just as shady as the music business, Q(-tip) record industry rule number 4080 I don't want to spoil the film but it will hopefully be on at a local cinema near you now (released 09-10-09) and I'm giving it the two thumbs up (pause), too many rofl moments so don't snooze! It's a strange mix of improvised comedy and part reality. It's on till Thursday 15th Oct.

Word is Scorz is officially out of retirement and signed a new deal which is great news, now get down to your local cinema, it's better than any other film out at the moment and may be the best film this year

So you love hip-hop? But you don't feel that it's quite the same as it used to be? Here's what you've been missing. The Freestyle Professors consists of Branesparker and Giff (previously Geo of Geo & Ricochet). The first thing that hits you is how raw the album is (this is a good thing) with sparse production and some dope flows. Production is mostly handled by Branesparker, the Freestyle Professors have also used the talents of DITC's Show(biz), Buckwild, Diamond D and Lord Finesse with Diamond's beat the best thing I can remember him doing since "The Great Diamond D", Shows contribution is a dope raw drum loop with not much else, but it stands out and makes me wish other rappers would chose this type of beat over his more recent sounding productions. Minnesota and 12 Finger Dans contributions are highlights too but it's Branesparkers own production that really shines here.

Theres a few guests and it's great to hear Stanley Grimes again (pka Page the Handgrenade) after wondering what happened to him after his appearance on Check Me Out Baby Pah from Finesse's amazing Crates To The Files (is the first 2lp pressing a boot or semi-legit?) Akbar appearing on two tracks was also a pleasant suprise. Lyrical content is varied from battle raps to more conscious subject matter. I haven't listened to one album this much in years so that should be recommendation enough to go get a copy.

I was meant to do a post on the great Confuse A Few 12" (below next to the equally dope Vintage EP) and took that pic back in April so I've been slacking. This also contains the non album tracks "We Won't Stop" and "Grit Dat Grime" as well as the Confuse a Few", "We Won't Stop" and "Jump On It" instrumentals. No radio show last night due to technical problems in the studio I'm told should be fixed for next weeks so fingers crossed, as you've got no radio show to download heres something else for you to check..I thought I'd posted his back when it first dropped but looks like I didn't so my bad and better late than never (or go revisit it if you got it a few months back and haven't played it for a while). This is surprisingly Truths debut ep and a mighty fine listen from start to finish it is too, plus as one of th hardest working people in this country (organising Rapsploitation Sessions which is one of the best nights in the UK, runs the website and does promo for peeps I'm not actually surprised). Featuring the additional vocal talents of Kosyne, Sonnyjim, Grimlok and Conflix and production is handled by Archimendes, Charlie Mac, Hoaxman, Sivey, Mr Laws, Mazzie, Prolifik & Truth himself whos no slough on the boards. Kimbo hooked up some nice artwork and best of all it's FREE so you've no excuses, "Pass That" is my joint (no pun intended)

It's always great when you can be proud of you friends but this is pretty special. I don't want to bore you with lots of history (damn we've been friends for over half my life!) but I was there when he got his first set of decks so to see DJ Rasp go onto win the DMC UK Supremacy Title this year is super props and fully deserved as I know how much he's practiced and his genuine love for the art and a really humble guy.
